Tennis is not just for the summer! Our members want to play all year round, and that gets harder when the days get shorter and winter weather sets in. As long as there isn't constant heavy rain there are nearly always members who turn up and play at the weekend, even in the snow!
In 2016 we applied and were granted planning permission for floodlights on Braithwaite Hard Court 1. This project is now underway with quotes being submitted and funding due to begin in 2017. If things move quickly we may have floodlights up and running over the 2017/18 winter season which will be managed through our court booking system,
The club organises a 2 hour slot in Carlisle at Chatsworth Indoor Tennis Club on Sunday afternoons from 4.00 - 6.00pm during the winter months. This means 8 players are guaranteed weekend tennis no matter what the weather. All competent players are invited and those interested are allocated sessions based on availability and demand.
Indoor Soft Tennis
A new addition to the clubs activities in 2016 was Soft Tennis at the Sports Hall in Keswick School. You play on a badminton court with the net 2 feet high. A large sponge ball is used along with mini racquets. This is excellent for learning ball control as spin and aiming for placement and angles rather than power are the key to winning points. It is also good for those who find tennis a bit fast paced or tough as the rallies go on much longer and it doesn't hurt at all if you get hit by the ball! This leads to longer rallys where you can gain fitness, improve your footwork and improve your swing!
It is held on Tuesday evenings when it's too dark in the evenings to play tennis. Sessions are between 8.00pm to 9.30pm and cost £5 for adults and £4 for under 18s.
This has been very popular amongst juniors and beginner adults who weren't confident in their tennis ability. So if you are a beginner, it's the perfect environment to learn racquet skills!
