Keswick and Braithwaite Tennis Club Report Week 9... 18 June to 24 June
Dougal Atack, captaining Keswick’s first team, led his team in a spirited performance at Fitz Park last Tuesday against aspirant divisional champions Lorton to not only clinch a victory by the narrowest of margins but also to continue their inexorable progress up the league table. Dougal and his partner Rob Saxton won three of their four sets to leave the game in the balance at the half way stage and though our second pair, Rob Moir and David Lake only managed to win a single set their performance was good enough to draw the match 4-4. There followed a tense interlude at the end of the match while the number of games won by each pair was totalled, resulting in Keswick being declared winners by 38 games to 34.
In contrast, captain Ian Hollinshead’s second team, despite fielding one of the strongest teams of the season, including Mike Green, Jonny Piercy and David Lake, all of whom have represent the club at first team level recently, struggled against a lively and youthful Maryport that were just too overpowering for them. Only Ian and Jonny were able to salvage anything from the evening by winning Keswick’s only set of the match in a 1-7 reverse that saw the team lose ground in the league table.
In a week of mixed weather conditions neither of our ladies’ teams were in action, rain, wind and tennis make uncomfortable bedfellows, resulting in cancellations and postponements and a backlog of fixtures to be played at the end of the season.
The grass courts in the Upper Fitz Park, despite being in the best of condition this year, are getting only sporadic use due to the wet weather and really need to dry before the bounce is once again tolerable, so at the moment most play is taking place on our all weather courts at Braithwaite
It’s to be hoped that the weather is once again co-operating when out first “Rusty Racquets” coaching session (see advert on back page) takes place on 5 July.
