Keswick and Braithwaite Tennis Club Report Week 28 May-3 June
The club’s grass courts in the Upper Fitz Park are playing better than ever this year and are now fully open for play. Club members have been taking full advantage of this and attendance at club nights has never been so buoyant, nor has the weather ever seemed so perfect for tennis. In the West Cumbria League, only two of our teams have played this week and both ran up against stiff competition, checking in both cases what seemed an inexorable climb up the league table.
Keswick’s Men’s Second Team came up against a very lively top of the table Maryport team at home and though our first pair Filip Jencke and Martin Pavlu performed well and managed to take their opposite numbers to tie breaks in both sets and to force a third tie break against Maryport’s first couple, they were unfortunate to lose all of these and ended the evening without a set to contribute to the score. Team captain Ian Hollinshead and his partner Kevin Pratt similarly lost all their sets to concede the match 0-8. Maryport have some very talented young players this season and look unstoppable in their bid to take the league title. Our men still retain third position in the second division table however and on current form should be capable of improving their position before the end of the season.
Our ladies’second team had a similar experience to the men, losing 8-0 against Maryport who are not only the dominant club in the league this season but also determined to reclaim their place in the first division. The Keswick ladies were captained by Timmea Vismathy, supported by Janaki Spedding, Gill White and Jane Ma. This was a match rearranged due to a postponement and a quite different line up to the team that played Maryport the previous week turned out on Thursday, testimony to the depth of the pool of players that can be called on. It is the team’s debut season in competition and there have been a few inevitable setbacks, despite this the ladies are not dismayed nor is their enthusiasm diminished; the experience of match play is increasingly sharpening their game and improving their tactical awareness and confidence. They still retain a league position in mid-table and are eagerly anticipating their next on-court encounter against lowly placed Whitehaven 3 who our ladies in turn defeated 8-0 earlier in the season.
